Personal, Social & Health Education
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
Ephesians 4:32
At Radwinter CofE (VA) Primary School we believe that Personal, Social, Health, Relationships, and Economic education (PSHRE) is fundamental in nurturing well-rounded, confident, and compassionate children. Rooted in our Christian vision of “growing and learning together to embrace life in all its fullness” (John 10:10), our PSHRE curriculum equips children with the knowledge, skills, and values to thrive personally and socially in an ever-changing world.
What Will Children Learn Through PSHRE?
Our PSHRE programme is designed to nurture love and kindness to others, to ourselves, and to the world, reflecting God’s boundless love for everyone.
Children at Radwinter will develop:
- A strong sense of identity, self-belief, and confidence, recognising their uniqueness and respecting others.
- Key life skills such as resilience, teamwork, leadership, and emotional wellbeing.
- Healthy lifestyle choices and routines to support physical and mental health.
- An understanding of economics, including managing money, earning, spending wisely, and financial responsibility.
- Knowledge of relationships and sex education (RSE), helping children build and maintain loving, respectful relationships, understand bodily changes, and nurture emotional wellbeing.
- Respect and openness towards diversity, learning to appreciate different cultures, religions, and viewpoints with maturity and kindness.
Our curriculum reflects the values of fairness, forgiveness, kindness, respect, and service—ensuring children embrace life in all its fullness by looking upwards, outwards, and inwards.
How Is PSHRE Taught?
PSHRE is delivered both explicitly and implicitly:
-
Weekly dedicated lessons cover three key themes:
- Relationships
- Living in the Wider World
- Health and Wellbeing
-
Lessons are engaging and varied, including debates, role-play, creative writing, quizzes, drama, and group projects. This variety encourages reflection, discussion, and practical application of skills.
-
Everyday school life reinforces PSHRE values—whether resolving playground conflicts, encouraging resilience in learning, or promoting good manners and organisation.
-
Collective Worship at the start of each day provides opportunities to explore PSHRE themes in a spiritual context, encouraging reflection and celebration of achievements.
-
Class teachers, who know the children best, lead most lessons, fostering a safe environment for honest conversations. We also collaborate with external agencies such as Essex Fire Service and local army barracks to provide specialist knowledge and experiences.
Supporting Every Child
We recognise the diverse needs of our pupils, including those from low-income or disadvantaged backgrounds, children with SEND, and service children facing unique challenges. Our staff are committed to:
- Listening to children’s voices and opinions.
- Providing mentoring, counselling, and mindfulness practises.
- Creating a culture of openness and trust where children feel safe to seek guidance.
- Using assessment tools like the Pupil’s Attitude to Self and School (PASS) survey to identify and support individual needs.
