History

Understanding history is key to embracing life in all its fullness, and at Radwinter CofE (VA) Primary School we are committed to helping every child develop a rich and well-rounded knowledge of the past, both of the British Isles and other important periods in world history. Through this, children gain a deeper understanding of the world around them, their own heritage, and the diverse society we live in.

What Will Your Child Learn in History?

History at Radwinter is much more than memorising dates and events. It is about interpreting evidence, asking meaningful questions, and thinking critically. Our curriculum encourages children to:

  • Become increasingly critical and analytical thinkers by examining historical evidence and forming their own interpretations.
  • Develop a secure understanding of the chronology of British history alongside significant global periods.
  • Discover links and connections between historical events and their local community in Radwinter and the wider world.
  • Deepen their knowledge of change and continuity over time, exploring how societies evolve.
  • Differentiate between types of historical sources and understand how interpretations of history can vary.
  • Identify similarities and differences within and across periods they have studied.
  • Engage in historical enquiry, asking questions and developing informed opinions about the past.

Through this approach, children do not just learn about history—they learn to appreciate its relevance and complexity.

How is History Taught?

We are committed to making history lessons engaging and memorable. Children at Radwinter experience creative, hands-on learning that brings history alive, including:

  • Drama techniques that immerse children in historical stories and perspectives.
  • Study of artefacts that provide tangible links to the past.
  • Educational visits to local museums and historic sites such as Saffron Walden Museum, Cambridge Museums, Duxford War Museum, and Audley End Estate.
  • Visits from local experts who enrich our understanding of specific historical periods.

As children progress through the school, topics are explored in greater depth. For example, Year 6 pupils build on their earlier learning by making more complex connections and comparisons between different historical periods and their own lives. By the end of Key Stage 2, children have a secure chronological understanding of British history from the Stone Age to the present day.

Our teaching focuses on key historical concepts:

  • Characteristic features of societies — their beliefs, lifestyles, and cultures.
  • Change and continuity — understanding chronology, similarities, differences, and perspectives.
  • Cause and consequence — exploring the reasons behind historical events and their impacts.
  • Interpretations — distinguishing between fact, fiction, and different viewpoints based on evidence.
  • Enquiry — developing skills to ask questions and analyse artefacts to find answers.

What Are the Outcomes for Your Child?

Our History curriculum is carefully planned to ensure continuity and progression, aligned with our school’s Christian values of fairness, kindness, respect, and service. Children are encouraged to:

  • Think critically and ask thoughtful questions about the past.
  • Examine evidence with an open mind and develop their own interpretations.
  • Use key historical vocabulary confidently, with their understanding assessed at the start and end of each topic.
  • Participate in interviews and discussions about their learning to deepen their understanding.
  • Benefit from collaborative dialogue among staff to share best practice and ensure high-quality teaching.
  • Receive feedback through marking that supports their progress, in line with our school’s marking policy.

This approach reflects our vision of “growing and learning together to embrace life in all its fullness” by nurturing inquisitive, well-informed children who appreciate the richness of history and its lessons for today.

Bringing Our Vision to Life Through History

Our History curriculum embodies the values we hold dear at Radwinter. By exploring diverse societies and their histories, children develop respect and understanding for different cultures and perspectives, preparing them to thrive in a multi-cultural world. Our focus on enquiry, fairness, and kindness ensures every child feels valued and empowered to contribute their unique voice.
